We’ve managed to engineer a situation where Germany and France are allied against the UK. (John Klin, “Brexit XXL”)

“British policy has always been to intervene on the continent to keep the European balance. We’ve often been with the Germans against the French, or with the French against the Germans, because one or other of the two was becoming too powerful. Brexit takes away the possibility of intervening in European matters. Even worse, we’ve managed to engineer a situation where Germany and France are allied against the UK. The principles of diplomacy in the past still hold for the modern economic system: we need balance of trade on a European scale. The imbalance in the system has been to our detriment.”

(John Klin, conversation with the Prime Minister at Chequers)
